Makara
Sankranti is a festival day in the Hindu calendar, dedicated to the deity Surya
(sun). It is the mark for farmers that the sun is back and that harvest season
is approaching which is called Makara Sankranti/Mahasankranti.
The
festivities associated with Makara Sankranti are known by various names, such
as Magha Sankranti in Nepal, Magh Bihu in Assam, Maghi (preceded by Lohri) in
Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, popular amongst both the Hindus and
Sikhs, Sukarat in central India, Thai Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Ghughuti in
Uttarakhand Makara Sankranti in Odisha, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Goa, West
Bengal (also called Poush Sankranti) and Uttar Pradesh (also called Khichidi
Sankranti) or as Sankranthi in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
This is a
festival of sweetness because of til-gul where sesame and jaggery laddoos or
chikkis are served among all. It makes people closer as it is sprinkled with
love and sugared with care. People together does the kite flying believing it as
a tradition as well all their worries flies in air.
Makar
Sankranti is believed to be a period for peace and success. The day is regarded
as important for spiritual practices and accordingly people take a holy dip in
rivers, especially Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Krishna and Cauvery. The bathing is
believed to wash away sins.
The festival
is one of bonding where every member of society is asked to bury all the
enemies and foes and live with peace. Makar Sankranti generally marks the
beginning of the Kumbh Mela in Uttar Pradesh while in South India, in Kerala,
one of the most austere and difficult pilgrimages of Shabrimala ends on this
auspicious day. This day if someone dies his soul reaches to Lord. He attains Moksha.
I believe
that yes, it is the time of harvesting purity in mind and leaving the weeds
aside. Let us shower all our feelings and make all our relations as til-gul, sweetened
and delicious. Let go of worries and let all of us fly high with lovely
colours.
Say To One
And All-
We Love! We
Care! We Provide Shoulders! We Fly Together! We Are One!
Happy Makar
Santranti!
